La Damnation de Faust demands outstanding performers, capable of lulling us with their delicacy before sweeping us away with their dramatic intensity. Faust’s story leaves no room for half-measures. While the choir plays a central role in the score, it is the three soloists who carry the full dramatic weight of the work. For this unique concert, we are thrilled to welcome three international stars, all already well acquainted with this demanding piece.
A true specialist in the French repertoire (Faust, Roméo et Juliette, Cendrillon, L’Enfant et les Sortilèges, Werther…), Julie Boulianne returns to the role of Marguerite, which she has previously performed at the Quebec Opera Festival and the San Sebastián Music Festival alongside Bryan Hymel. From Werther to Dialogues des Carmélites, the Canadian mezzo-soprano has accustomed us to interpretations that are both sensitive and powerful, gracing the world’s greatest stages from Covent Garden to the Theater an der Wien.
To embody Faust, we welcome one of the most sought-after tenors of his generation: Saimir Pirgu. The New York Sun has said that for him, the sky is the limit. A regular on the world’s most prestigious opera stages, from the Metropolitan Opera to La Scala in Milan, he brings the full range of expression required for this demanding role. With his radiant timbre and magnetic presence, he promises an unforgettable Faust, a role he has already performed in a production directed by Peter Stein.
Completing this exceptional trio in the role of Méphistophélès is bass-baritone Erwin Schrott. The Uruguayan artist has made the diabolical character one of his trademarks, having performed it in all three major versions of the work—Berlioz, Gounod, and Boito. His charismatic presence and deep voice will bring to life both the darkness and the seductive allure of the tempter.
