CIDOO 2025: That’s a wrap on an unforgettable edition!

The International Opera Conducting Competition (CIDOO) 2025 has officially concluded after an intense week of competition, shining a spotlight on the next generation of conductors. This 3rd edition brought together candidates from around the world, each showcasing their talent through a series of demanding rounds under the scrutiny of an esteemed jury of international experts.

The finalists in action on an unforgettable evening

For the grand final, the three remaining conductors took to the stage, leading the orchestra, choir, and soloists in iconic excerpts from the operatic repertoire:

Johann-Sebastian Guzman (USA/Colombia, 29) conducted Carmen by Georges Bizet (Entracte and Act II, Scene I – Chanson Bohème through Scene II), featuring Carmen, Escamillo, Frasquita, Mercédès, Zuniga, Moralès, and the men’s chorus.

Matteo Dal Maso (Italy, 27) took on La Cenerentola by Gioachino Rossini (Sinfonia and Introduction), directing Cenerentola, Tisbe, Clorinda, Alidoro, and the men’s chorus.

Sieva Borzak (Russia/Italy, 28) led the orchestra in Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi (Prelude and opening of Act I), featuring Rigoletto, the Duke of Mantua, Count Monterone, Marullo, Countess Ceprano, Matteo Borsa, Count Ceprano, and the men’s chorus.

Each finalist brought a unique artistic vision, demonstrating leadership and musical sensitivity, elevating these masterpieces of opera.

An outstanding lineup of winners

At the end of the evening, the jury—composed of nine international experts—delivered its final verdict:

1st Prize – Sieva Borzak
2nd Prize – Matteo Dal Maso, who also received the Audience Prize, awarded for the first time this year thanks to the support of National Lottery of Belgium players.
3rd Prize – Johann-Sebastian Guzman
