In an underprivileged neighbourhood of Los Angeles, the lives of seven young people intertwine: a delinquent at a crossroads about the choices he has made in life, a mother who is an illegal immigrant from South America, an idealistic lawyer, a journalist, a policeman with doubts about his sexuality, a family planning employee and a Don Juan preacher. An earthquake strikes the city and the crisis gives rise to many upheavals in the destinies of the protagonists.
This story is inspired by the testimony from a survivor of the earthquake that struck Los Angeles in 1994. John Adams and his librettist have succeeded in spinning a genuine story with a wide variety of musical styles, a subject that closely resonates with the youth of today, with tones that are familiar to them, subtly and intelligently organised, full of meaning.
