About the work

In Seville, in the 18th century, the cheerful barber Figaro helped Count Almaviva to conquer Rosina. But Rosina, who did not remain indifferent to the serenades of her mysterious suitor, is jealously guarded by old Dottore Bartolo who intends, helped by the sinister Don Basilio, to marry his ward as quickly as possible.

Il Barbiere di Siviglia, created in 1816, is Gioachino Rossini’s best-known opera and is considered by many to be the masterpiece of Italian opera buffa.

The story is taken from the comedy Le Barbier de Séville ou la Précaution inutile by Beaumarchais (1732-1799), played for the first time at the Théâtre-Français on February 23, 1775, one of the three plays by this author with, among his heros, the character of Figaro.
